Port of Bahia Blanca to support hydrogen economy in Argentina

The Port of Bahía Blanca has become the first port to join the Consortium for the Development of the Hydrogen Economy in Argentina (H2ar).

The consortium is led by the YPF technological division together with Conicet (Y-TEC) to develop a collaborative business platform between companies integrating the hydrogen value chain.

Joining the consortium will open up more business opportunities for the port in the future and make it a key part of the market, with opening opportunities in both domestic and export markets. Given its strategic position with respect to natural gas production centres and wind power generation parks, the port will create all the ideal conditions to be a central player in the production and use of low emissions hydrogen at scale.

YPF (Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales) is a vertically integrated Argentine energy company involved in oil and gas exploration and production and the transportation, refining, and marketing of gas and petroleum products. YTEC is a technology company established in 2013 by YPF (51%) and Conicet (49%), aiming to provide technological solutions to the energy sector.

The Port of Bahía Blanca is also a part of the Global Coalition of Hydrogen Ports to promote hydrogen as a key vector in the energy transition. The coalition aimed at promoting the deployment and use of hydrogen in logistics and ports and is supported by leading countries such as the US, China, Japan, Germany, Norway, India, France, Russia, Spain, Canada, Brazil and Chile.

Federico Susbielles, the president of the Bahía Blanca Port Management Consortium, said, “Being within this important group is part of the new national agenda to promote the production, use and export of hydrogen.”
